The aerodynamic shell of the pod is due to its multiple double curved surfaces a complex part during the production phase. Therefore, to ease manufacturability and enhance the formability of carbon fibre fabric around the shape, the aerodynamic shell is produced through a process called vacuum infusion.
During vacuum infusion, multiple layers of carbon fibre fabric are placed in the mould. High-strength resin system impregnates the fabric due to an induced vacuum. To ensure high mechanical properties while maintaining low weight, we decided to use the EPIKOTE™ Resin MGS RIMR035c set by Hexion. The resin system is a two components system composed from a resin and hardener. The final product is cured in a large oven at temperatures higher than the glass transition temperature of the resin.
